Product Description
This file completes my Cedarapids Pitmaster Rock Crusher. Included are two different styles of rear axle and two styles of front axle.
The front axle options include the tongue, axle and pedastal option and a dolly fifth wheel option. The pedastal installs right over the hitch post included in the pitmaster body component; use a #61 (#60) drill bit to clean out the mounting hole in the pedastal and use 1.0mm wire for the pivot post and for the inner axle for the tires. As an option, one might also simply use the two piece dolly instead; paint, install the hitch on the underframe, and install either dual wheels or single wheels on 1.0mm wire.
The Tandem setup has two sideframes, a narrow center axle, and two endcaps; drill the holes out with a #61 (#60) drill bit to facilitate the instertion of 1.0mm wire, cut to length, and then glue the end cap to the wire without getting any glue on the side frames. This should allow the side frame to articulate. The tandem tires themselves should be mounted on a similar piece of 1.0 mm wire, though this axle might not freewheel once completed. There is further an optional brake set, whereas one mounts on each inside corner of the tandem assembly with the rod facing the backside of the tire hub. If this tandem option is not desired, two regular straight axles have been included.
The Pitmaster was on the small end of secondary rock crushers and it could just as well have only a single rear axle with dual rear tires. Similar size rock crushers are further seen with the tandem assembly but only the inner dual tire present on each hub, especially in military service.
The tire set is a set of hubs, rims and tires for a 900R20 military nondirection tread as found under most M35 and M35 variant military trucks to include the CCKW 2.5 ton truck that predated the M35 series, along with many trailers.
This file includes 12 tires, 6 convex rims with lug nuts, 7 concave rims with lug nuts, 4 concave rims without lugnuts, and 5 convex rims without lug nuts. These rims may be used in any arrangement for up to four axles with 12 total tires.
This file is setup to include spare rims for either concave or convex fitting to where it sets on the vehicle. The rim lip is set up to go outwards towards the viewable surface so that the gap is hidden inside the model between the tire and the frame.
To paint these pieces, separate the trees and paint the hubs, rims and tires separately from each other. Once one side is painted, remove the parts from the trees with some flushcut dykes, lightly sand the parts where the trees were attached, and affix the painted side to some light duty scotch tape or gentle masking tape (painter's tape) to hold them to a card or board. Paint the remaining side.
The hubs and rims are separat to make it easy to paint the rims a different color than the hubs; the tires are further separate from the rims to facilite the use of airbrush or spray paint with ease.
When finished, use 1.0 mm wire to make axles to length; use a #61 drillbit to clean the axle holes, widen with a #60 only if the axle will not fit be careful not to remove too much material. Ue glue if the hole gets too big.
