The Kzintis are a species of eight-foot-tall felines; the Klingons call them “tigermen.” They are adjacent to the Federation (and have fought two major wars with them, losing both) and the Klingons (and have fought several wars with them, winning a few and losing a few). Kzinti ships are armed with disruptors, phasers, and drones. They have more drones on their standard warships than any other empire, and forests of phaser-3s, because their ships are designed to fight each other. (They have had more civil wars than foreign wars.) They are enemies of the Klingons and Lyrans and allies of convenience with the Hydrans and Federation.
The Kzintis tried to improve their medium cruiser by replacing the center warp engine with two frigate engines in a “V” configuration, which provided more power. While the ship benefited from the increased power, the layout of weapons on the hull did not allow the addition of much in the way of additional firepower. The fourth disruptor found in the medium command cruiser was installed, as well as additional phaser-3s and improvements to the ship’s drone racks and reloads that would later become the standard Y175 refit, but the resulting ship was something of a disappointment. Noting the relatively small firepower increase, the Kzinti fleet command decided not to go forward with the project, and only a handful of ships of this class were produced. The drone racks on this ship were always two type-B (large magazine) drone racks and two type-C (fast launching) drone racks. This ship could always launch drones at the maximum rate of the given drone rack each turn. Known names include Black Claw, Blooded Claw, Dark Claw, and Night Claw.
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
