This is a strong protective case for the the iPhone 6, which is stylish and functional in terms of strength and convenience of use. We have put a lot of thought into the use of the new generation of mobile phones which are ever more fragile and expensive at the same time.

This is the first model in the line of protective products for mobile devices. The first case is for the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6+ version will follow and then cases for the most popular and most vulnerable mobile devices in the market.

The initial idea for the strong case came from the reports of 'Bendgate' about the iPhone 6, however it is also the damage to this delicate phone, mainly in the form of shattered screens that our product protects against. But it is not just the value of the phone we are protecting, it is also the amount of data that is carried in the phone that you do not want to lose. Who backs up the data, regularly, in a mobile phone?

The case is made from a strong polymer, made in 3D printing and it incorporates an innovative metal insert in the cover, which provides the strength to protect the mobile phone as well as providing an elegant feature due to the range of finishes it can have and you are able to say which finish you want as well as the case colour.

The metal insert is made from steel and you have a choice of finishes from stainless steel to gold plated steel. Because of the special design of this metal reinforcement, the case is still very light and does not add noticeable weight to your cell phone.

FUNCTIONALITY

The case is strong enough so that it can also double up as a stand for the phone, at two different angles, which makes it very versatile. Not only this, but also the cover is held up, when first opening it, so that the rear camera is not obstructed by it if it folds back. The case has a specially designed mechanism which holds the cover in two positions for the hand-held use and the table or surface use of the phone. Finally, the cover acts as a handy aid to hold the phone, with one hand, while operation it with the other hand.

DESIGN

It is nice to have an enclosure made of plastic, leather, fabric or rubber for the basic mechanical protection against damage and also for reasons of aesthetics and comfort in use by having a tactile material. I chose a polymer as one can mould in several features for the functions I want my protective case to have. However, these materials cannot provide much protection against bending or pressure unless they are rather thick and we do not want to end up with a chunky enclosure for a nice and slim device.

The only other solution is to use a very rigid material, such as steel, to provide the rigidity that is needed in the case to protect the mobile device against bending. Attempts have been made to make metal enclosures for mobile phones. However, they have a problem: the manufacturers of these mobile devices do not like metal, carbon fibre or magnets in the proximity of their devices as they can cause interference to their radio signals and their sensors such as magnetic compass, proximity sensor and gyroscope.

My solution is to add a reinforcing element to the soft case, made of steel and inserted in the plastic body of the case. However, this element must not add considerable weight to the case, it must not make the case too chunky and it must not be close to the mobile device when it is in use. I designed a metal component based on my calculations of maximum strength with the minimum of material used and this is the resulting shape: it adds aesthetic value to the case too. But this is not all: I have designed it in such a way that the metal part is close the the mobile phone when not it use and stored such as in a trouser rear pocket. However, when the case is opened for use, the metal part is moved away from the device so that it will not cause interference.

I am a very experienced Product Designer with a Masters degree from the Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. I have had an extensive career, working continuously designing products, first as an employee of two top design consultancies in London and then with my own business Source Product Design Ltd. (sourcepro in the net).

I have worked on a wide variety of products both for the consumer and 'specialised' markets. I have designed for corporate clients many IT and personal product. My expertise for this product comes from experience designing computer products for the military but also consumer products with a high aesthetic value. I am in a unique position whereby I can bring together the expertise of designing rugged products with products that largely depend on their styling for their market success.

I obtain feed-back from many sources, not least my own family. I am blessed with two daughters who have already expressed their preference for the purple version of the case and have given me suggestions for future versions of the iPhone case.
