It is nice to have
an enclosure made of plastic, leather, fabric or rubber for the basic
mechanical protection against damage and also for reasons of
aesthetics and comfort in use by having a tactile material. I chose a
polymer as one can mould in several features for the functions I want
my protective case to have. However, these materials cannot provide
much protection against bending or pressure unless they are rather
thick and we do not want to end up with a chunky enclosure for a nice
and slim device.
The only other
solution is to use a very rigid material, such as steel, to provide
the rigidity that is needed in the case to protect the mobile device
against bending. Attempts have been made to make metal enclosures for
mobile phones. However, they have a problem: the manufacturers of
these mobile devices do not like metal, carbon fibre or magnets in
the proximity of their devices as they can cause interference to
their radio signals and their sensors such as magnetic compass,
proximity sensor and gyroscope.
My solution is to
add a reinforcing element to the soft case, made of steel and
inserted in the plastic body of the case. However, this element must
not add considerable weight to the case, it must not make the case
too chunky and it must not be close to the mobile device when it is
in use. I designed a metal component based on my calculations of
maximum strength with the minimum of material used and this is the
resulting shape: it adds aesthetic value to the case too. But this is
not all: I have designed it in such a way that the metal part is
close the the mobile phone when not it use and stored such as in a
trouser rear pocket. However, when the case is opened for use, the
metal part is moved away from the device so that it will not cause
