Leo is one of the earliest recognized constellations. The Mesopotamians are known to have described the “lion” constellation. The Persians called it Ser; the Turks, Artan; the Syrians, Aryo; the Jewish, Arye; the Indians, Simha which asll translate as " Lion".
The constellation becomes visible in the Northern Hemisphere around the spring equinox and is easily identifiable through May. Leo lies between Cancer to the west and Virgo to the east.
In Greek Mythology, Leo is the "Nemean Lion", which was killed by Hercules on one of his 12 labors.
In astrology, Leo is the fifth sign of the Zodiac and represents those born July 22 to August 22.
