Following on the success of the Jayhawk destroyer design, the Star Empire made a similar series of frigates to replace the elderly indigenous Hobbie frigates and Shrike corvettes, as well as the costly frigates bought from the IKS navy. By sacrificing longevity for greater firepower and reduced (immediate) cost, the Star Empire bought itself a powerful little combatant, albeit at the cost of future maintenance woe.
Skua was the official Confederation reporting name, but some wags in the fleet took to calling it the “war turtle”.
