Product Description
I insist on using the term "hemiolia" for this ship and never "hemiola," since the latter is used in music. Both mean "one-and-a-half" in Greek, and while I can understand the reason for the musical term being named such, I'm not sure what it applies to on this warship, which has a single bank of 28 oars. This type of ship is a smaller, slower, and overall more primitive design than the trireme, but it was considerably cheaper to build and required a much smaller crew. Normally, they were not as heavily decorated either, but I have kept the same fancy stern present on the trireme so as to distinguish which faction the ship belongs to. The Athenian version of the Greek hemiolia is made strictly for naval combat, unlike the Spartan version, which allows troops to board enemy ships. This model has a hole between the mast and stern to hold pins or flags.
