Product Description

Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) back from extinction.

The first time I saw a Dodo was in The Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, it left a lasting impression on me, I must have been around 12.

The flightless bird related to the pigeon family was about 3 feet high and has become an icon for extinct species caused by man. The dodo was native to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. European explores first wrote about them in the late 16th century, less than eighty years later they were extinct.

The flightless and fearless bird did not have any predators before humans and there was plenty of food on the island, this would have made them very comfortable and happy, they only laid one egg in a nest on the ground.

When the Europeans arrived they brought with them domestic animals. If one dodo was captured or it was in stress other dodo’s because of their inquisitive nature would come to investigate rather than runaway making them easy prey.

The model of my dodo has been based on popular images which scientists say are a misinterpretation and there is evidence the bird would be much slimmer.

There is something charming and innocent about the dodo that’s why I created it, it also acts as a reminder of how man’s selfish actions have an impact on other beings and the planet. The model looks great in coloured strong and flexible and gives and desk or space a colourful lift.

This model is 80mm high there is also smaller version at 35mm high
