"City of the Sun Pt. 2" by Afaina de Jong / AFARAI & Innavisions
City of the Sun Pt.2 is a contemporary take on life in Brooklyn, especially in the neighborhoods of Brownsville, East New York, and Canarsie, seemingly the only three neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are not gentrifying. In order to create a souvenir that could represent these three neighborhoods, one has to address the whitewash of Brooklyn’s future and the absence of the black presence in futuristic visions for this borough.
Brooklyn boasts many eye-catching buildings, but there are hardly any iconic architectural representations in these neighborhoods, which have predominantly project housing. To represent these predominantly African-American neighborhoods in the form of a souvenir, an afrofuturistic approach to architectural representation was necessary. By merging graphic artwork and architectural form, City of the Sun Pt. 2 rejects Western minimalist tradition and fully embraces a 21st century maximalist style. Taking as starting points the sunset at Canarsie Piers, the colorful street murals that uplift the communities that reside in these neighborhoods, and places like The Hole, the famous street basketball court in Brownsville, the two distinct sides of the souvenir represent an—at times—tough and inaccessible part of the city, but also the vibrancy of the people who live there and are able to create culture that spreads beyond the confines of their neighborhoods.
