Product Description
This striking pendant replicates the largest gear of the Antikythera mechanism - an ancient Greek analogue computer, impressively advanced for its time, composed of more than 30 interlocking gears that allowed it to track the movements of the sun and moon, predict eclipses, and serve as a celestial calendar. Discovered in a shipwreck in 1901 by Greek sponge divers off the island of Antikythera in the Aegean, it dates back to the late 2nd century BC and is thought to have been created by Greek astronomers, possibly connected to Hipparchus of Rhodes, who may have designed it or worked on it himself. First found as a corroded hunk of bronze and debris, the mechanism was overlooked for years while other statues and artifacts from the wreck were studied. Currently, it exists in 82 fragments and is kept at the National Archeological Museum in Athens. Our stunning stainless steel pendant measures .9 inches in diameter and is electroplated with .1 microns of gold. As Prof. Michael Edmunds of Cardiff University, who led a 2006 study of the mechanism, says of the device: It's "just extraordinary, the only thing of its kind." We couldn't agree more. This piece of the ancient world is a dazzling addition to any ensemble.
