G scale GP7 GP9 Winterization Hatch

3D printed in matte translucent plastic that showcases fine and intricate details.
Product Description

This item is designed specifically to be made with Frosted Ultra or Extreme Detail plastic. This 1:29 scale part is an add on detail to the G scale USA Trains GP7-GP9 locomotive; it is designed to fit directly onto the model locomotive. Unlike any plastic model ever produced until now, this model includes the manual control lever to one side, open see thru grating, finely detailed hex bolts and other attachment details. From above, you can even see through the mesh grating to the radiator fan below! On the prototype GP7 and GP9 locomotives, the winterization hatch was permanently attached to the top of the long hood of the locomotive, fitting over one of the radiator fans. The purpose of this was to re-direct hot exhaust air coming from the radiator in the cold winter months, providing pre-heated air for the diesel engine. In summer, the internal mechanism would allow the hot air to simply escape straight up through the grating. Many US and Canadian railroads used these, primarily those operating in northern climates with cold snowy winters. Included in this long list are Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Northern Alberta, Soo Line, Western Pacific, Union Pacific, Great Northern, Burlington Northern, Milwaukee, New Haven, Penn Central, Lehigh Valley, Grand Trunk, and many others.

This type of winterization hatch also appeared on many other GM-EMD locomotives.  For example you can find these on SD9 units of the Burlington Northern, and Duluth Missabe and Iron Range DMIR).
