Product Description
I insist on using the term "hemiolia" for this ship and never "hemiola," since the latter is used in music. Both mean "one-and-a-half" in Greek, and while I can understand the reason for the musical term being named such, I'm not sure what it applies to on this warship, which has a single bank of 28 oars. This type of ship is a smaller, slower, and overall more primitive design than the trireme, but it was considerably cheaper to build and required a much smaller crew. This version, unlike the Athenian or Phoenician varieties or the comparable Roman actuaria, has a boarding ramp at the front, so that after ramming an enemy ship, the Spartan soldiers can rush aboard and do what they do best. If playing Avalon Hills Trireme board game, then this ship is effectively the corvus upgrade for the Greek hemiolia, as the Greeks did not use the corvus, only the Romans did. This model has a hole between the mast and stern to hold pins or flags.
