Product Description
Vacuum-brake assembly for LNWR carriages built between c.1890 and c.1892, with yoke handbrake-linkage. This suits certain of the 6-wheeled carriages to 30'1" length, notably D385 brake-van. It does not suit the 28' Mansion-House brakes, which I believe to have had a chain linkage for the handbrake. See also my separate models of similar brake assemblies with chain linkage for the handbrake, and with no handbrake.

The print includes:
  • vertical vacuum-cylinder;
  • vacuum reservoir;
  • cruciform crank and hangers;
  • handbrake crank and yoke linkage;
  • section of coach's middle longitudinals on which the other parts are mounted.

The brake pipework is not included in the print because most of it would be too fine to print in 4mm scale. It can readily be represented in wire. Details of supports and fasteners between the longitudinal bearers have been left out because they are completely invisible in a finished model. However, the fittings in the outside of those bearers are present.

The dimensions were taken from the drawnings of A. M. Gunn, as reproduced in the book LNWR 30ft 1in Six-wheeled Carriages by Philip Millard.

Some parts of thin section have been strengthened to make them printable. Most of the hangers and securing straps were 0.5" thick on the full-size coaches and these are printed at a minimum thickness of 0.5mm. The forked part of the brake pull-rod is printed at a greater diameter than scale. Finally, the fasteners securing the parts are enlarged to 1" diameter, which I suspect is overscale but won't greatly affect the appearance of the print.
