Product Description
Prototype to Product 3D Printing Contest - May 13th to June 30th 2014

The box © will be used in the launch of a new fashion watch brand which aims to be different in many ways, from packaging to product, and is assembled in 3 parts. Other surprises will be disclosed in due course. That said, the main issue with low-cost 3D printers nowadays is that the output is not at all reliable. Much ado about nothing. We therefore quickly jumped to Shapeways as their huge hi-res machines do a job no 3D printer out there can beat. Simply unrivaled. Yarrr!

3D printing is great for making prototypes and personal objects in limited editions. However, and unlike what propaganda claims, we don't believe 3D printers may one day allow people to mass-produce final products, mainly because 3D printers are confined to use the same business model as color printers or coffee machines. It's all about making high margins on consumables.

Therefore, our biggest issue in the “Proto to Product” process was not to make a neat 3D printed design but to make it ready for plastic injection molding. And this is where everything became highly challenging. If you have no industrial molding skills (most designers don't), be ready to struggle hard against DFM (design for manufacturability) to mold and mass-manufacture your final product as cost-effectively as possible. But that's another story, isn't it?

We will likely use Shapeways again to make our next prototype a little more user-friendly. For the rest, we would love to donate Form1+ either to the Fab Foundation in Boston, London or to our local Fablab fellows in Switzerland to help student designers as well as many biotech start-ups in the area make their creativity and custom designed products come even closer to a high resolution reality.

Made by creative rebels.

Avast me hearties! Splendiferous artists, painters, skullptors, graphic designers will be welcome to join the crew as soon as we hoist the colors. Until then, follow our ship's log on Twitter, if ya dare!
