Product Description
The design of these cubes was inspired by the concrete block designed by Frank Lloyd Wright called the 'Ennis Block'. It was used on a few homes Wright designed as well as in some Hollywood movie sets like 'Blade Runner'. Wright's design was an exercise in 'shifted squares' which resulted in an asymmetrical motif. Because the design is NOT perfectly symmetrical about the diagonal, each cube I created in the series had to resolve the asymmetry issue differently depending on how the corners and edges were arranged.
Cube 02. This was the second cube in the design series. After completing the first cube, I wanted to see if I could stay closer to the original Wright design, minimize the deviations and still be able to map it to all 6 faces of a cube. So for this cube, I went back to the original design, gave the motif some thickness and mirrored the relief on the backside. I then arranged the thicken motif as a pin-wheel with the dominant corner at the center. The extra thickness made it possible to apply the pin-wheel design to all 6 faces of the cube because it enabled the edges of the faces to be fully connected. I still incorporated voids to add a dynamic depth to the entire design and the relief is evident on the inside faces of the cube.
