Product Description

This is a pair of O scale 1:48 models of the high mounted electrical battery connector as found on the GP7's and GP9's of Canadian National. All of these locomotives had these installed when built, and lasted well into the 1980's when they were removed. Many people mistake these for a second MU (27 pin) connection but they are not. On CNR, like most railroads, the MU connection on the GP7 and GP9 was mounted quite low to the deck. This second connection (as it was described to me by a retired CNR locomotive engineer) was used to connect the batteries of the multiple units together. This was especially helpful in cold winters in remote locations; all of the batteries together could start a single locomotive which in turn could generate power to start the rest. This was also useful when the batteries on one unit were defective, the other units could provide electrical power to the crippled unit and keep it running. Other railroads which had this feature (though mounted differently) were UP, WP, and DRGW. Locomotives on the CV had connections very similar to those on CN, not too surprising as it was a CN subsidiary. Oddly the GT and GTW, also subsidiaries, did not have them. This detail item has a 1/16" stem on the bottom to help locate and glue this part into place. This 2 pack is enough to complete one locomotive.
