Product Description
USS Intrepid (CV-11) is one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in August 1943, serving for the rest of the war in the Pacific Theatre in TF 58, participating in the Philippines campaign, the battle of Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, and Wake Island among others.
After the war Intrepid was decommissioned in March 1947, becoming part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. However, in 1952, the carrier was put back into service and thoroughly modernized following SCB-27C reconstruction to operate jet aircraft, work that was completed in 1954. Recommissioned as CVA-11 (attack carrier), the Fighting I alternated deployments in the Mediterranean to exercises in the Caribbeans until the early 1960s, being then reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier), and refitted once more.
From 1966 to 69 Intrepid made three combat tours to Vietnam, then relieved her sister Yorktown (CVS-10) as flagship of Carrier Division 16.
From 1971 onwards, she was engaged in NATO exercises and gunboat diplomacy, while cruising the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic and Arctic Seas; however in 1974, getting a bit long in the tooth, Intrepid was decommissioned for the last time.
From 1976, thanks to the work of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, the ship is preserved as a museum in New York City as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, undergoing renovation in 2006-08.
