Product Description
The M1904/05 Austro-Daimler armored car is widely regarded to be the first modern, fully armored car to be accepted into service by any military service. The original version, based around the hull of an Austrian licensed built Daimler, was fully armored, and provided with extended shock absorbers, a specially designed headlight, and an improved ventilation system. It featured a rotating, round turret equipped with two machine guns. The M1905 was upgraded with slightly better visibility and handling, and included opening the area above the driver's compartment, as well as opening the top/rear of the turret so that the gunner had a broader field of vision, permitting the addition of a third machine gun if desired. Crew of the vehicle, surprising for a relatively small armored car, was four. We aren't sure how many of these were built. Although only one is accounted for, multiple photos of variants, including one with a 37mm gun mounted in the turret, have surfaced. In addition, records from the Great War clearly identify at least one "Austro-Daimler" armored car among the inventory of one of Austria-Hungary's armored car squadrons. To complicate the matter even further, there's a period photo, dating around 1909-1910, from the Ottoman Empire depicting a similar (but not identical_ armored car and clearly identified as an "export model Austro-Daimler Armored Car." This vehicle is scaled properly in 1/56 and will work very well alongside 28mm miniatures. Because of the nature of the extended springs/shock absorbers, we've found that it prints best in Black WSF. We've often had prints rejected by Shapeways because of the nature of the model, otherwise.
