Q-04: "UniFolds" by Jenny Sabin Studio: Jenny E. Sabin, Jingyang Liu Leo

Flushing Meadows Corona Park forms the Eastern edge of Queens Community District 4. A former ash dump and swamp, Robert Moses envisioned and transformed what F. Scott Fitzgerald referred to in The Great Gatsby as “a grotesque garden”
into a new Central Park. Moses’s vision became a reality when the site was selected for the 1939 World's Fair with the initial theme of “Building the World of Tomorrow.” Two structures embodied this theme, the cinematic 200-foot-wide Perisphere and the 700-foot-high Trylon. The interior of the Perisphere featured two opposing rotating discs, transporting visitors from the earth of their today to a kaleidoscopic vision of the city of tomorrow through purified air conditioning and giant projections produced by Kodak. The sphere, an icon of utopian form in its perfect geometry of minimal material and maximal space, again appears in the 1964 World’s Fair at Flushing Meadows as the Unisphere. A symbol of the dawn of the space age, the structure also reflects the fair’s theme that year of "Peace Through Understanding.”

The communities of Q-04 continue to experience growth and change. As a site of dynamism and transformation, Flushing Meadows is not just an edge of Q-04, but an opening to the world, a symbol of the transformation of an ash dump to utopian visions so materialized through the iconography of the sphere. Drawing upon this history, UniFolds embraces change and transformation, in which architecture adapts in multiple contexts without edges and borders. Geometrically, the project incorporates Kirigami from the Japanese “kiru” (“to cut”), bringing a previously unattainable level of design, dynamics, and deployability to self-folding and -unfolding materials from the molecular to the architectural scale. UniFolds follows the concept of "Interact Locally, Fold Globally," necessary for deployable and scalable architectures, a future souvenir where geometry and matter operate together as an adaptive, elastic ground.
