Product Description

Savannah was a heavily modified Richmond class ironclad built at the city for which she was named, constructed with near vertical sides in a manner that mimicked the design of CSS Arkansas. She was well regarded, and was referred to more than once as "the finest ship in the Confederacy." Her crew was constantly at the ready, and she was said to be able to react quickly and decisively to the various requirements of her position. She was burned to prevent capture when General Sherman's army approached Savannah, though orders had been given to prevent this. She likely could have made the escape to Columbus, so the reason for her scuttling is something of a mystery. Historically, Savannah was painted a medium or led grey, red at the waterline.
