The San Diego-Class is the first of three ship classes that comprised the New Navy Standard Aircraft Classes. After a series of experimental ships and limited production runs (such as the Indianapolis Class), the defining characteristics of US Floating Ship design were formalized in the “Standard” Classes. These ships all rely upon heavy automation, strong surviv-ability features, a pressure hull capable of water landings, long range, and a speed of at least 35 m/s. They also share an angular design to their hull.
