Product Description
HO Scale [1:87] CNSM 150 - 164 series coach. Hi all, thanks for your interest in my HO North Shore car, as you can see I model N scale and have nearly the full range of cars, I have had numerous requests to produce the cars in HO which I have done as a trial for the 150-164 car. My thoughts and experience of 3D printing in this project and hopefully answer some of your questions, price – I will not go into detail about how 3D printers charge but will say if you compare my models to similar sized models you will find that you will be hard pushed to find models that cost less, I do this as a hobby not a business [yet!]. Quality – As you can see the model in the pictures is produced in white strong and flexible, the resolution for this material is 0.2mm, the downside is that the surface has a slight grainy feel and the detail is not as sharp as we may wish, the model is as strong as the name suggest and do not be worried about the flexible bit, on my model this only applies to the middle of coach side at the bottom where a bit of force will push the sides in and go back to normal when released. My personal opinion is that if you wish a car to run on a layout to be viewed from a normal viewing distance the product fits the bill at a reasonable cost. Other materials – Frosted ultra detail will give the best resolution and quality and my models are not designed for HO to bring out the best whereas they are in N scale, i.e. details you would not see in N scale are omitted but could be added for HO. The cost of the model in FUD would be nearly double that of WSF, FUD is also more brittle and a good squeeze of the model would crack it. The cheaper product Frosted detail in my opinion does not really give a much better quality over WSF as the print lines are more visible, so you either get a rough surface or a surface with lines on it at a higher cost. The other problem I find with FUD and FD is that on large flat sides they can warp if not thick enough and the length of this car would possibly introduce a bow. The model is designed to accept a 1mm [40thou] sheet as a floor, which sits against the projections on the inside wall [see picture]. I am in the process of drawing the underfloor detail parts which can then be added to the styrene sheet.
