Product Description

Phoebe is a small, irregularly shaped moon of Saturn that was first observed by William Henry Pickering in 1899. It was the first satellite to be observed photographically, using photographic plates taken in 1898 by DeLisle Stewart. Though Phoebe is roughly spherical it has a differentiated interior. It was spherical and hot during its history, but repeated impact have given it its current irregular shape.

The satellite is named for Phoebe, one of the original Titans of Greek mythology, and a daughter of Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth). Her name was traditionally associated with the moon and the Oracle at Delphi, making her the Titan goddess of prophecy and oracular intellect.

This desk sculpture pays tribute to this moon and the mythical figure after which it is named.
