Product Description
BK-11: "Liberty Fever Cake Figurine" by Rafael de Cárdenas / Architecture at Large

RDC/AAL have designed a souvenir for the area of Brooklyn Community District 11, comprised of the neighborhoods of Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Mapleton, and Bath Beach. While far removed from the recognized epicenters of the city, the area is a culturally vital one, having constituted fertile ground for a shifting range of immigrant communities since at least the dawn of the 20th-century. It bears a significant historical relationship both to the city’s working class population and to its pop cultural representation and iconic, cosmopolitan identity. Famous as an enduring stronghold of Italian-American culture, Bensonhurst also harbors one of the city’s most populous Chinatowns (Manhattan’s pales in comparison). This area is arguably the heart of the pre-gentrifying Brooklyn of film and TV; the Brooklyn made particularly famous from the 1950s through the 1970s via The Honeymooners and Welcome Back Kotter, The French Connection and Saturday Night Fever, all of which have imbued the popular imagination with vivid representations of this particular milieu.

RDC/AAL’s design embraces the pop iconography of this area while gesturing towards the shifting sociocultural complexity beneath that iconography’s surface. Taking the form of a cake-topping figurine synthesizing two instantly recognizable figures of particular significance to this area—the Statue of Liberty and John Travolta’s character from Saturday Night Fever—it is mounted here on an elaborate but ephemeral sculptural base: a tiered layer cake (to be consumed at the exhibition opening) that combines textural impressions of the area’s architecture with flavors significant to its varied communities.
