Product Description
The Kyokuyo Maru was originaly build as an whale factory ship. Before the WW II she make several anctarctic voyages in this role. Shortly after the war begins, the IJN takes the Kyokuyo Maru in service as an auxiliary oiler. She makes many trips to the oilfields of Brunei and Sumatra. Several times she was used as troop transport to Rabaul and other occupied islands. In January 1943 she was hit by 2 torpedoes of USS Trout, and was repaired in Singapore. In 1943 she was attacked two more times by US submarines, USS Pompano and USS Tambor, but all of the five torpedoes who are hitting her were dud. So she was a very lucky ship. Her fate was an air attack by TF 58 carrier planes after she was grounded in a typhoon near the island of Amami-Oshima between Tawiwan and the japannese Mainland. Several other japanese whale factory ships are build like the Kyokuyo Maro with only minimal differences.
