Over 300 of these small bases were spread across the Federation, and other empires had similar bases spread to the same extent. Their purpose was to receive, boost, and retransmit data streams for the Federation-wide commercial and military communications network. Each station had a small crew to maintain the equipment, and subspace links to six other stations that were 300-1000 parsecs away. (In the high-density core of the Federation, there were places where several of these stations were literally within sight of each other, allowing more elaborate networks with more capacity.) If a colonist on the rim of the Federation wanted to email his mother on Earth a birthday card, it went through a dozen or more of these relay stations. In wartime, these stations became the prey of deep raiders that wanted to disrupt the communications networks of Federation industry and Star Fleet. This is the Type-A station built by McCammon Communications.
This base is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
