Product Description
USS Hancock (CV-19) is one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in April 1944, serving for the rest of the war in the Pacific Theatre in TF 38 and TF 58.1, participating in the Philippines campaign, Wake Island, and Iwo Jima among others. She became flagship of TF 38 in November 1944.
After the war Hancock was quickly deactivated in April 1946 in Bremerton, Washington. However, in 1951, the carrier was put into drydock for the SCB-27C reconstruction to operate jet aircraft, recommissioning in February 1954 and being reclassified CVA (attack carrier). She was the first US carrier to be fitted with steam catapults.
The ship spent the year off the US coast testing her new plane-throwing devices, as well as Sparrow and Regulus missiles trials, moving to the Sea of Japan the next year, until 1956 when she was brought back home for her SCB-125 refit.

Hancock was present during the entire Vietnam war, operating in eastern waters from 1964 to 1975; during the latter year her air wing was disembarked and she was fitted as an ad hoc helicopter carrier for amphibious operations.
The ship was finally decommissioned in 1976, with 32 years of service under her keel. She was sold for scrap in September of that year.
