GWR Tadpole A, Diagram S5 - Stove Pipe (Part 4)
History.
Thise 6-wheeled 4 plank open fish wagon with Guards compartment was built in 1888 as a broad gauge vehicle but later converted. The fish would have been packed in ice, in either barrels or crates and due to the perishable nature of the cargo the wagons were built to run in passenger trains at express speeds.
Initially this wagons would have been in the standard goods wagon grey and carried the number 42800 but was repainted in the brown vehicle livery around 1913 when it was renumbered 2045 in that list.
This kit represents the vehicle in its standard gauge form and comprise seven parts spread over five prints, a Chassis (Part 1), Body (Part 2), Roof (Part 3, Stove pipe (Part 4) and 3 glasing pieces (print 5) most are designed to clip together although the stove pipe and glasing will require gluing once pushed up from the underside of the roof.
This chassis (Part 1) has been designed to use HORNBY R8264 14.1mm Coach Wheels with "Romford" 2mm plain or shouldered brass bearings (neither supplied). I would recommend removing the flanges from the centre wheel set (unless your points and layout have very shallow curves).
On some prints, I have found that the brass bearings are a very tight fit so I would recommend that the bearing holes are cleaned out with a fine sharp object (pin) to ensure there is no dust from the manufacturing process.
The chassis is provided with NEM coupling pockets.
To complete the model, you will need the following:
Part 1 GWR Tadpole A, Diagram S5 Chassis
Part 2 GWR Tadpole A, Diagram S5 Body
Part 3 GWR Tadpole A, Diagram S5 Roof
Print 5 Glasing pieces.
Buffers, wheels, couplings, paint, and transfers.
I would also recommend adding weight to improve running.
