"Silapatchoulol". The scent of patchouli, which is attributed mainly to (–)-patchoulol, consists of camphoraceous, woody, and earthy facets in almost perfect balance. (–)-Geosmin is the principle earthy odorant, and when a molecularly designed cis-decalol intersection structure displayed woody and camphoraceous but little earthy character, both were superimposed ('Scent and Chemistry – The Molecular World of Odors', Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2012, p. 255–256). The resulting overlay was cut into pieces, and the central quaternary carbon was replaced by silicon, since that gave a better overlay with (–)-patchoulol due to the 20% elongated C–Si bond. In addition, it allowed for easy permutation of substituents. The best patchouli odorant with a threshold of 0.14 ng/l air was then found in a highly symmetrical tricyclopropyl-substituted derivartive ('Novel Silicon-​Based Patchouli Odorants of the Trialkyl(1-​hydroxy-​1-​methylethyl)​silane Type: Design, Synthesis, and Olfactory Properties' by A. Sunderkötter, S. Lorenzen, R. Tacke, and P. Kraft in Chemistry – A European Journal 201016, 7404–7421). This almost completely symmetric "silapatchoulol" molecule was now placed on a diamond-shaped cone, thereby constructing a little spinning top to enable some structural explorations in a playful manner: Upon spinning you can see the globular part around the silicon atom hovering elegantly above the diamond cone, and we can imagine this to be responsible for camphoraceous aspects. The little asymmetry due to the dimethyl carbinol can be seen as the woody contribution, and the distance of both elements then simplistically could key some earthiness. Of course that is science fiction since this "silapatchoulol" interacts with different odorant receptors as a whole molecule, but nevertheless this spin top is an addictive toy and fun game: guaranteeing a little entertaining pastime with reflections on molecular symmetry and olfactory properties.

The dimensions of the silapatchoulol spinning top are ca. 4.0 cm × 2.9 cm × 2.8 cm, and despite the asymmetric dimethyl carbinol unit on top, the "silapatchoulol" top spins easily for around 10–20 sec made from stainless steel and 5–10 sec from strong and flexible plastic. By carefully blowing air with a little straw on the cyclopropyl paddles, you can make it even spin almost forever. The stainless steel spinning tops spin better and longer than those made from precious or semi-precious metals or aluminum, since the symmetry of the latter suffers from slight printing inaccuracies. The spinning tops from strong and felxible plastic spin astonishingly fast and well. The ones made from frosted extreme or ultra detail and those made from raw aluminum need to be handled with special care as they are quite brittle.
