Product Description
Lovers of alpine landscapes who are familiar with the American West will tell you that the Beartooth Wilderness and Mountains on the border between Montana and Wyoming is one of the most beautiful terrains in the United States. While some vistas impress by their grand scale (and TinyMtn wants you to see things on a micro-scale) the Beartooths are landscape on a...shall we say...meso-scale. As you hike it, you bounce between endless "little landscapes": small pools, grassy tufts, rock platforms, and stands of trees, often no larger than a tiny park; one after the other for miles. Each little space is all yours, calm and serene and thoroughly, perfectly natural. Japanese garden designers couldn't do any better.

This model of the Beartooths obviously won't transport you to these micro landscapes, but the textures and colors should be familiar. We use a natiowide elevation dataset from the USGS for the geometry and a satellite photograph from August 15, 2020, for the colors. If you haven't been there, do yourself a favor and visit in person - don't just drive through on your way out of Yellowstone. You'll thank me later.

Model scale is 1:500000
Model measures 3" x 1.92" x 0.41" (7.6 x 4.9 x 1.05 cm)
Original area is approximately 24 by 15.1 miles
Altitudes covered: 6613' to 12617'
There is no vertical exaggeration applied to this model. This is a true-to-life scale model of a real place.

TinyMtn models are most affordable in the "Sandstone" and "White Natural Versatile Plastic" materials. This model is in "Sandstone," which is a glued gypsum material. When you receive the model it will be ready for display, though it may smell funny and need some time to air out. "Sandstone" models are much more brittle than "Versatile Plastic" models, but feel more like light stone. Do not soak it in water, though you can safely seal it with Polycrylic or a similar water-based clear spray sealant. Read more about this popular material here.

All TinyMtn models have hollow bottoms - this is to save on weight, and thus cost. Many larger models also have extra flanges on their undersides to increase rigidity and strength. To make the model more solid, you should feel free to carefully pour resin into the bottom cavity, or glue a properly-sized slab of wood or another material into it.

These models have been optimized for the above materials, and are not offered in other materials for strength or cost reasons. If you need one in another material, please tinymtnbiz@gmail.com and we'll do our best to fulfill your request.
