Exaltolide

Exaltolide (oxacyclohexadecan-2-one, 15-pentadecanolide, Exaltex, Thibetolide) is the most natural and most sensual musk odorant, the musk with the least animalic side aspects. Exaltolide conveys an odor impression associated with the smooth and soft odor of baby skin, it is the reference to pure muskiness. However, as the main musk odorant of angelica root oil (Angelica archangelica L.), Exaltolide comes fresh from the vegetal kingdom. It is also responsible for the musk note the resin of Pinus pinaster Aiton develops when exposed to sunlight ('Scent and Chemistry – The Molecular World of Odors', Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2012, p. 343–345). On the contrary, the macrocyclic musks from the animal kingdom are exclusively ketones. Originally, musk refers to the exocrine odor glands of the male musk deer (Moschus moschiferus L.), the odorous principle of which, (–)-(R)-muscone, was isolated as early as 1906 by Heinrich Walbaum. Yet, muscone, while also possessing a soft, sweet musk odor, is more powdery, warm, fatty and animalic than Exaltolide – while its geometric shape is less symmetrical, thus less beautiful and attractive for the use as pendant.

The dimensions of the Exaltolide pendant are ca. 2.5 cm × 3.0 cm × 1.9 cm, and the hole for the necklace (not included) has a diameter of ca. 2.9 mm. It fits nicely to a more massive rhodinated curb-chain necklace, such as the 2.5 mm/45 cm Oro Vivo SK20259 depicted (art. no. 7611324771731).
