The shape (&) came about at least 1500 years before its name. In first Century, Romans used to write in cursive. Latin word for and was “et”. There was a practice of writing “E” and “T” together to form a ligature.  Over the period many ligatures were used in cursive Roman. The ET symbol evolved over the period. Although by 9th century use of most ligatures diminished, ET-ligature was continued to be used. It gradually became more stylized and less revealing of its origin leading to its current form: &.

“&” was regarded as the 27th letter of the English alphabet. In the early 1800s, school children reciting their ABCs concluded the alphabet with the “&”. It would have been confusing to say “X, Y, Z, and.” Rather, the students said, “and per se and.” “Per se” means “by itself.” Over time, “and per se and” was slurred together into the word “ampersand”.
