Spumellaria is a type of Radiolarian, an aquatic protozoan life form that forms a fantastically intricate silica-containing shell inside a shell. The sea floor is composed of their microscopic fossilized skeletons. The delicate spines on the shell are important for the buoyancy of the plankton during its lifetime, but break off when the shell is deposited in the sea bed. Inspired by an Ernst Haeckel drawing, Ontogenie Design allows you to view and wear the shells of these amazing creatures, in three dimensions, without the aid of a microscope.
This is the large version of the Spumellaria pendant, 4.3cm in diameter. A smaller pendant, 2.6cm in diameter, is available here: http://shpws.me/MNl9
