Product Description

Set of six individual cylinders for WWI Daimler-Mercedes Flugmotor Typ D.IIIa and D.IIIaü (180/200 PS) in 1:32 scale. Intended for use with our D.IIIa crankcase (sold separately) or the Wingnut Wings Mercedes D.III/D.IIIa engine sprue, found in the Albatros D.Va, Fokker D.VII, Pfalz D.IIIa, D.XIII and several other kits, and also sold separately.

This product is a revision of the initial design an features better exhaust flange detail, recessed valve seats to better accommodate the Taurus valve springs, and better fit with the kit with the kit intake manifold. The cylinders are now hollowed, and although it is not possible to obtain true scale wall thickness, this may open up some diorama possibilities!

Please Note: this is not a drop in replacement part; the kit block part E14 must be modified by removing the bottoms of the cylinders on the top of the block. Additionally, I have a complete replacement crankcase in development for the D.IIIa motor, which is currently in Beta.

The D.III cylinders are identical and have interlocking upper water jacket connections. You may need to modify the front and rear cylinders to mate with the kit water pipe connections (part E21 for the rear connection; front connection varies by aircraft kit). They also feature bosses ready made for use with Taurusmodels resin upgrades -- valve springs, spark plugs, priming cups and valve gear. You will need to supply your own cylinder flange to crankcase bolt head details; Masterclub makes excellent resin bolts in a variety of styles and sizes.

The manifold intake hole can be enlarged to 1.80mm by carefully drilling it out in .05mm increments, starting with a 1.50mm bit. Once enlarged, the Taurusmodels castellated manifold nut is a drop-in fit.

To prepare the parts for painting, scrub them with a toothbrush in ordinary dish washing liquid and rinse thoroughly, or soak them for up to 10 minutes in a small jar filled with acetone (nail polish remover.) Once the waxy support material is completely removed, the parts will appear white wherever support material was needed during printing. We recommend carefully sanding these white areas with a sharpened fine grade sanding stick (or similar) to remove the texture caused by the support material. With care this can be done without spoiling the details.

These cylinders have been successfully printed in Frosted Ultra Detail and Frosted Extreme Detail. Photos coming soon.
