This is the first time i tried to make something that should work mechanically. Luckily the clearances were big enough and everything worked!
I reused the bodies from the old birds as they were my design, and tweaked them for more stability. Everything now stands quite well.

They're for sale in my shop (might have to browse through the pages):

    which one is your favourite?

    deskfanbird: ug16491

It actually rotates when you blow into it

    clothespinbird: id=ug16491

    scissorbird: ug16491

    spyglassbird: =ug16491

(the minimum clearances dont allow for a very tight fit, which you can see in the last picture. But it does stay in place and can't fall out)

    speakerbird: ug16491

Unfortunately i dont have a video camera, as soon as i have one i will make some videos of the birds in action.

Thanks to Whystler for giving me some of the ideas.

Very cool!I designed some similar models last year but with humans. They look like the sort of thing that could go well as designer toys :)

Very cool! I love that you were able to make them with moving parts.

I think the scissor face is my favorite one.

I agree with Inlite, they totally look like something I would find in a designer toy shop.

Its just GREAT! I like the clothespinbird the most.

I dont know why, but when I see the birds, I must think immediately of MTV, they always got this kind of creatures in there commercials.

    thanks for the replies guys!

interesting point about the designer toys, pherhaps if the finish is a bit more smooth they could pass as a DIY model. I'll do some tests :)

I have to say good job to shapeways for always delivering. I wasn't sure at first wether or not these things would work.

Noodles: haha after uploading these i remembered your awesome shark and croc pins! I love em.
I think the clothespin bird is my favourite as well, but i'm most happy with the fanbird actually working.

Inlite: Your models were awesome, i'd love to see some more done in the same style.

still working on finding a videocamera.

wonderfully playful designs with a nice dose of function thrown i there, for some at least. like you said, video of the movement action would be great!

also love the coloring in your renderings, just how some o the connecting details pop when contrasted between white and green, miss it a little bit in the 3D prints.
