good image for rendering printed metal material.

    regarding the surface texture of metal prints.

    Does anyone have a photo or simulated texture that can be used to create the material in a rendering package?

    I sue flamingo, and I would need a jpg or bmp to do so...
    even if you dont have a "tile" image, any large DPI of the surface (without harsh highlights, and preferably on a flat area) would prob get me started.

    My 2 cents, simple texture maps won't cut it for metal.
    I use purely procedural textures, but bitmap equivalents for the following also work :

    - Good high contrast reflection environment is essential, preferably HDRI, or multiple lamps with different intensities and colours. But a black background with bright white stripes usually works.

    - Bump map with a subtle dot/pit pattern, about 0.2mm pit size, 5-10% coverage

    - Color map : dark grey/black with white spots and stripes

    - Reflection amount, light grey (85%) with black spots and stripes

    - Some blurring on the reflection always helps

    - Reflection color might be toch reddish, because of the bronze.

    And for rendering, Global Illumination and Caustics work wonders.

    It is far from perfect, I'm still tweaking it a lot.

    The whole dots and pits should be more pronounced and abundant in occluded and internal areas, since IRL they can't polish there.

    Procedural Materials are great because they are 3D, and I don't have to worry about mapping.

    However, a nice photo texture can have some really nice randomness that is hard to reproduce. I have a metal print with a big, flat side, so I scanned it and made a tile.

    Here are 800dpi diffuse, bump, and specular maps. They probably won't work straight away and will have to be blended with greys, leveled and tuned. Unfortunately the diffuse map has some specular highlights and is obliquely lit by the scanner, though I tried to minimize it. One interesting this is that you can clearly see the bronze and steel.

    This texture is about 5x2cm (2" x 0.8"), so you will need to tile your image x2.5 on the Y axis.

    It should look something like this:
