Unfortunately, this item was NOT polished. What I received was a very nicely modeled fin can that fit perfectly into the BT50 body tube. The finish was extremely rough (similar to 200-400 grit sandpaper) and would've taken an inordinate amount of time to sand sufficiently to even bother trying to paint (I tried sanding for a while, but I realized quickly that I would not have been able to sand sufficiently given the intricate design). I decided I probably received the wrong fin can, so I called customer service. They replaced the item without question and were extremely professional about the problem. Nonetheless, when I received the replacement, it had the same grainy, rough finish. This made me think that this is the best 3D modeling machines could make. However, today I saw a 3D printed item not from Shapeways that was far superior in finish. If anyone has received this item in a truly polished state, please let me know. I think Shapeways should probably define what "polished" means.
