According to PLASTICS & RUBBER WEEKLY<\/a>, Scientists have described a key step toward using billions of pounds of waste chicken feathers to produce strong, lightweight plastics<\/b>. The method was revealed at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society<\/a>.  Just imagine the smell of your MakerBot\/RepRap pumping out hot gooey chicken feather goodness at home…<\/p>\n

Others have tried to develop thermoplastics from feathers,” said
\nYiqi Yang, who reported on the research. “But none of them perform well
\nwhen wet. Using this technique, we believe we’re the first to
\ndemonstrate that we can make chicken-feather-based thermoplastics stable
\n in water while still maintaining strong mechanical properties.”<\/i><\/p>\n

And I thought chicken feathers were only useful to ensure white bread<\/a> is nice and fluffy.<\/p>\n

Comedic value aside, the Reprap currently can use Polylactic acid<\/a>
\n (PLA), a bio-degradable polymer that can be produced from lactic acid,
\nwhich can be fermented from crops such as maize. It is harder then PTFE <\/a>and
\n melts at a lower temperature (around 180°C to 220°C), so is potentially
\n a very useful material for 3D printing but exhibits higher friction
\nthan PTFE however which can make it difficult to extrude and more
\nsusceptible to extruder jams.  The concept of using an animal waste
\nproduct for plastic manufacture, either 3D printed or injection molded
\nis a step away from reliance on fossil fuels for polymer production.  <\/p>\n
