The complete architecture of the Shapeways web platform is<br \/>\n built around open source software (both commercial as non-commercial).In this post I<br \/>\n would like to go into the our contributions on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xj3d.org\/\">Xj3D<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Xj3D is a Java toolkit<br \/>\n for working with VRML and X3D content.We use Xj3D<br \/>\n throughout our 3D file processing, conversion and validation chain. And more<br \/>\n visibly we also use it in our Shapeways Creators like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/creator\/\">LightPoem or<br \/>\n Photoshaper creators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shapeways has<br \/>\n contributed quite a lot of code to Xj3D (approx. 100,000 lines of code). <\/p>\n<p>So what<br \/>\n have we added? An overview:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New filters:Combine Shapes &#8211;<br \/>\n     combine multiple shapes in one mesh <\/li>\n<li>Flatten transform<br \/>\n     &#8211; change a transform hierarchy into global coordinates<\/li>\n<li>Index &#8211; change<br \/>\n     non-indexed to indexed geometry\n<\/li>\n<li>Reindex &#8211; detect<br \/>\n     shared coordinates and change them into shared indexes <\/li>\n<li>Triangulation &#8211;<br \/>\n     turn any X3D geometry into a flat triangle array <\/li>\n<li>Center Filter &#8211;<br \/>\n     center an object <\/li>\n<li>Modify Viewpoint<br \/>\n     &#8211; change the view point or create a new one if not there <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most time went<br \/>\n into the ReIndex filter since it was the most difficult to get right. Although<br \/>\n the concept is simple rounding problems with float values gave us some<br \/>\n headaches. Collada (read)VRML97 (writing)STL (writing). <\/p>\n<p>The great thing<br \/>\n about open source is that you do not have reinvent the wheel. We know that<br \/>\n Xj3D is also used by the American Navy,<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n <\/span>NASA and Emerson. And they also contribute back which benefits<br \/>\n Shapeways and you &#8212; our community.
