Shane from Sandman Artistry<\/a> is with us in Eindhoven for Dutch Design Week<\/a>. We asked him what inspired him to 3D design and print the Weighted Companion Cube from Portal\u00ae:<\/p>\n

“The weighted Companion Cube is an object from Valve\u2019s 2007 1st person puzzle game Portal\u00ae<\/em>.\u00a0Between the interesting game mechanic, polished level design, and spot-on humor, it’s no wonder Portal\u00ae<\/em> was an instant classic.<\/p>\n

Ingame the player is deliberately lead through a series of devious ‘experiments.’ The Companion cube is presented to you with a flourish and required to navigate every obstacle on the level. The Companion cube is set up for the players to form a \u201cbond\u201d with before being forced to destroy it to continue.<\/p>\n

I created a series of Companion Cube-based products so players can continue to hold and love their lost inanimate object. That cube will always have a special place in my heart.”<\/p>\n
