Todd tries to get to an Orioles game each year, he says, but he certainly couldn\u2019t recite their roster from memory.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most rabid Orioles fan probably doesn\u2019t know Todd\u2019s name. About 9,000 of those seats \u2014\u00a0padded seats on the field level behind home plate and between the two dugouts; premium seats belonging to corporate and individual season-ticket holders \u2014\u00a0have a three-piece self-adjusting hinge that connects the part where you sit to the rest of the seat.<\/p>\n<p>The company that manufactured the padded seats sold their product line to another seating company, and the new owner doesn\u2019t make replacement brackets, which left the Orioles in a bind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t tell your fan, \u2018You can\u2019t come use your season ticket today,\u2019\u201d Todd says. \u201cSo I went down to meet with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, Orioles staff gave Todd a broken hinge and asked if he could make them a new one. So Todd measured the sample with calipers and modeled it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/autocad\/overview\">AutoCAD<\/a>. \u201cThere are interlocking pieces, so you have some things to factor in with spacing,\u201d he says, but otherwise the design is \u201creally straightforward.\u201d Then he ordered a 3D print of his design in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/materials\/strong-and-flexible-plastic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shapeways White Strong &amp; Flexible plastic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Todd brought his first prototype to Camden Yards. \u201cThey were curious why it was curved,\u201d says Todd, who assumed that the curve was part of the original design, not evidence of wear and tear. \u201cRemoving the extra curve made it easier,\u201d says Todd, who modified his 3D design file, then optimized a bulk purchase through Shapeways, so the Orioles can order 25 hinges at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t break every day,\u201c says Todd.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"http:\/\/toddblatt.blogspot.com\/2017\/07\/stadium-seat-repair-using-3d-printing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his blog, Todd wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I unfortunately don&#8217;t get to sell them the entire 18,000 sets of parts that they use for the whole lot because these are just replacements for when the originals break, but it&#8217;s still a nice order and pretty neat to add them to my client list!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-34715\" every project, Todd says, but \u201c3D printing allows an individual maker to compete with large companies,\u201d and it was the right solution for this one.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a tough season for Baltimore Orioles fans. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/sports\/orioles\/season-preview-2017\/bs-sp-orioles-special-section-predictions-20170322-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baltimore Sun sportswriters predicted<\/a> that the O\u2019s would make the playoffs, yet it\u2019s looking like they won\u2019t even break .500, and the Yankees will be hosting the wild-card game on October 3.<\/p>\n<p>Come spring, however, season ticket holders will be back in Oriole Park, and their seats, if not their hopes, will be held together by Todd\u2019s
