In other words, some mystery measurement X in your design might be mathematically determined by other measurements whose values you know.\u00a0But how do you solve for X?<\/p>\n<p>Well, fun fact: I&#8217;m a math professor, so buckle up and get ready for a an in-depth look at geometry and trigonometry! Wait, don&#8217;t go&#8230; I&#8217;m just kidding; today I&#8217;m just going to give you the answers! This Tutorial Tuesday is a cheat sheet for figuring out side and angle measurements of triangles. If you care to delve deeper into the mathematics, then you can follow the video tutorial links after each table below.<\/p>\n<h3>When Am I Ever Going to Use This?<\/h3>\n<p>Ah, the age-old mathematics question. Let&#8217;s start with an example. Suppose you are making a trophy with a slanted base, and want to add text to the front of that base. You might know the lengths of the horizontal and vertical sides of the red triangle shown in the figure below, and want to know the length of the diagonal, to know how much height will be available for text. In the three sections below we&#8217;ll provide quick and easy shortcuts for finding length and angle measurements of right-angle triangles.<\/p>\n<h3>Side From Two Sides<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start simple, with something you might remember from school: If you know any two side lengths in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Right_triangle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">right triangle<\/a>, then you\u00a0can solve for the length of the remaining side, using the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pythagorean_theorem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pythagorean Theorem<\/a>. Using the first formula in the figure above, we can find the available height for the slanted text area by typing &#8220;square root of 35^2 + 5^2&#8221; into the free online calculator and algebra system <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wolfram Alpha<\/a>, to get X=35.355 mm, as follows:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33185 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa.jpg\" alt=\"math 3D design 3D design software 3D design tutorial how to 3D design\" width=\"691\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa.jpg 691w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-420x259.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-555x341.jpg 555w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-409x251.jpg 409w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-90x55.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-400x247.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/wa-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you want to know more about the math behind these calculations, check out the Kahn Academy video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/math\/geometry\/hs-geo-trig\/hs-geo-pyth-theorem\/v\/introduction-to-the-pythagorean-theorem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Side From Side and Angle<\/h3>\n<p>If you know any one of the non-right angles in a right triangle, plus the length of any of the three sides, then you can find the length of any of the remaining sides using trigonometry, with the functions <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trigonometric_functions#cosine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cosine<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tangent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tangent<\/a>. If you can&#8217;t remember how to work with those functions, or even if you&#8217;ve never heard of them before, don&#8217;t worry. You can use the buttons &#8220;sin&#8221;, &#8220;cos&#8221;, and &#8220;tan&#8221; on any calculator, or on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wolfram Alpha<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are six situations to consider, depending on how the angle you know is situated with respect to the side length that you know, and the side length that you don&#8217;t know. To do this we use the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inverse_trigonometric_functions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inverse trigonometric functions<\/a>:\u00a0inverse sine, inverse cosine, and inverse tangent.
