Last week, we went\u00a0to New Orleans to meet hundreds of \u00a0jewelers from around the world and showcase some amazing Shapeways jewelry designers at the 2017 Society of North American Goldsmiths Nexus Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The SNAG community came to New Orleans to buy gemstones and tools, and to learn\u00a0about\u00a0new jewelry-making technologies, including\u00a03D printing. Students, entrepreneurs, and veteran craftspeople took advantage of exhibitions, silent auctions, and a trunk show to display\u00a0their work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We got to meet many members of the\u00a0international jewelry community and hear their stories. Several of them\u00a0are already part of the Shapeways community.<\/p>\n

Rod McCormick<\/a>, for example,\u00a0is a metalsmith, sculptor,\u00a0and jeweler who teaches at the\u00a0University of the Arts in\u00a0Philadelphia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

McCormick\u2019s\u00a0original passion was for traditional metalworking methods: hammering, casting, chasing, repouss\u00e9, soldering, welding. Since 1990, he has been involved with CAD,\u00a0and much of his work now involves\u00a0digital processes. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

McCormick uses Shapeways Strong &\u00a0Flexible plastic<\/a>\u00a0and gold-plated steel<\/a>\u00a0to create custom brooches. He draws his inspiration from metalworking process, from 19th-century sheet-metal pattern-making to\u00a03D modeling programs. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jocelyn Kolb-DeWitt<\/a>\u00a0studied at the Tyler School of Art<\/a>, also in Philadelphia, and now teaches product design at East Stroudsburg\u00a0University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jocelyn Kolb-DeWitt designed wedding rings for her husband and herself.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kolb-DeWitt\u00a0has been 3D printing in for over 15 years, and her work draws on natural attractive elements such as bioluminescence and sexual dimorphism. Her wedding rings have an interlocking chevron design and are printed in 14k White Gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For the Parotia necklace, Kolb used Strong & Flexible plastic that she\u00a0hand-dyed, then put together with\u00a0other materials.<\/p>\n

At the end of four days filled with meeting new friends, learning new techniques, and splurging on tools and gems, Shapeways and\u00a0SNAG hosted a dance party to put a bow on the conference.\u00a0It had a masquerade theme with a DJ and a wild array of masks.<\/p>\n
