It&#8217;s not hard. Even these guys can do it:<\/p>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LFrdqQZ8FFc?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But what if you want to\u00a0put\u00a0a thing\u00a0<em>around<\/em> another thing?<\/p>\n<p>For an amateur 3D designer, how to wrap\u00a0something around another thing\u00a0is one of those questions that you know must have an answer but seems impossible to figure out.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0comes up so often, in fact, that we&#8217;re going to devote\u00a0all of this week&#8217;s Tutorial Tuesday to answering it using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grasshopper3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grasshopper<\/a> plugin that comes with the 3D modeling software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino3d.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rhino<\/a>. (See last week&#8217;s post for an <a href=\"http:\/\/tutorial-tuesday-18-parametric-modeling-grasshopper\" target=\"_blank\">introduction to Grasshopper<\/a>). And we&#8217;re going to give you the code so you can wrap your own things around other things.<\/p>\n<h3>Learn to Wrap<\/h3>\n<p>For example, suppose you have a flat band\u00a0that you want to wrap around an elliptical cylinder to make a bracelet. The band\u00a0we are trying to wrap around the wrist-cylinder might not be\u00a0the same length as the circumference of the cylinder, but we want it to wrap around the cylinder evenly. Download the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/geekhaus.com\/hacktastic_files\/bracelet_wrapper_share.gh\" target=\"_blank\">bracelet wrapper code<\/a>\u00a0and open it in Grasshopper to get started.<\/p>\n<p>With this\u00a0code, you can wrap any 3D object around a cylinder to make a bracelet by following these\u00a0steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a long flat STL model in software other than Rhino.<\/li>\n<li>Import that mesh\/STL object into Rhino and move it into the bounding box.<\/li>\n<li>Use sliders in the Grasshopper file to scale the bounding box to the size of your imported mesh<\/li>\n<li>Use sliders in the Grasshopper file to set the width of the gap, the width of the wearer&#8217;s wrist, the size of\u00a0the gap, and the desired amount of ovalness.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the rightmost Surface Morph box in Grasshopper and select &#8220;Bake&#8221; to create an exportable model of your curved design.<\/li>\n<li>From Rhino, select the wrapped object and then use File \/ Export Selected to export it as an STL file.<\/li>\n<li>Print and enjoy \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Let the bracelet-making begin!<\/h3>\n<p>Once you get this process set up, you can create a wide range of parametric bracelets starting from any models you like.
