Los Angeles, for example, had more than 1,200 streetcars running along 20 streetcar lines. Streetcars\u00a0were considered noisy and inflexible, however, and around the middle of the last century many cities ripped out their streetcar tracks and replaced streetcars\u00a0with buses, or switched to light rail systems.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone hated trams, of course, and from the beginning modelers tried to preserve them. London cut off its tram services in the early 1950s, and this 1958 newsreel shows a Mr. Jackson Stevens and his son, Nigel, rebuilt a miniature London streetcar line in their garden in Glastonbury, Somerset.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xEcEhjNCLs4?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, Nigel Stevens\u2019 grandson could begin with 3D printed model trams representing various cities and at various scales before painting, assembling, attaching pantographs, and running their own miniature tram lines. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<h3>London<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/1-43-LT-E1-500-Class-Tram.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tony Heselden of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/1.43transportmodels\" target=\"_blank\">1:43 Transport Models Shapeways shop<\/a> designed this <a>E\/1 500 Class tram<\/a>, an O scale\u00a0version of a London streetcar that served the British capital in the 1930s. It comes in two parts, with an insert for the seats. Tony recommends White Strong &amp; Flexible and makes this tram available in Frosted Ultra Detail also.<\/p>\n<p>Terry Russell of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryrusselltrams.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Russell Trams<\/a> built, painted, and photographed the E\/1 500 Class tram model above.<\/p>\n<h3>Vienna<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Wien-Type-F-Nr-701-750.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vienna operates its <em>Stra\u00dfenbahn<\/em>, or streetcar network, with 1,071 stations along 29 lines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/scalemodels\" target=\"_blank\">Scalemodels<\/a> has modeled several historic Viennese tram cars, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/LKP2X5TE7\/wien-type-f-nr-701-750-gehause-wsf?optionId=58334977\" target=\"_blank\">Wien Type F Nr.701-750<\/a>\u00a0at HO scale. If you decide to build this one, you\u2019ll also want to order the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/4D8YB5US2\/wien-type-f-nr-701-750-fahrgestell\" target=\"_blank\">seats<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/C2ZJFXNSW\/wien-type-f-nr-701-750-fenster?optionId=58335166\" target=\"_blank\">windows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.tramwaybastler.at\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tramwaybastler.at\/\">Tramwaybastler<\/a> (German for tram hobbyist) has more information about and models of Vienna streetcars back to 1897.<\/p>\n<h3>Prague<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tram-tatra-ckd-t3-scale-1-87-h0-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Czech engineering firm \u010cKD Tatra supplied streetcars to cities throughout the Soviet bloc, from Sarajevo to Samara. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/NDW77C3KB\/stra-szlig-enbahn-tram-tatra-ckd-t3-scale-1-87-h0?optionId=43820704\" target=\"_blank\">HO scale Tatra T3 <\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/tramvaj\" target=\"_blank\">tramvaj<\/a> is a miniature replica of the streetcars that served Prague from the 1960s through the 1980s.<\/p>\n<h3>Budapest<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ganz-uv-tram-budapest-n-scale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ganz UV trams were manufactured in the Hungarian capital in the decade following that country\u2019s 1956 uprising against Communist rule \u2014 when more than 100 Budapest streetcars were damaged or rendered useless, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bkv.hu\/en\/our_publication\/the_history_of_the_budapest_tram_transport\" target=\"_blank\">according to the city\u2019s transport company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/soehave\" target=\"_blank\">Soehaves workshop<\/a> modeled this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/J5BJ73VW6\/uv-tram-from-budapest-in-1-160?optionId=42592328\" target=\"_blank\">Ganz UV tram<\/a>\u00a0at N scale. The miniature is made to fit on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modeltrainplus.net\/products\/tomytec-tm-tr01-optional-motorized-chassis\" target=\"_blank\">Tomytec TM-TR01 chassis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Sydney<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Sydney-C-Class-Tram-HO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sydney had the largest tram network in Australia, but the last Sydney tram ran in 1961. Joseph Spinella of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/australian_model_trams\" target=\"_blank\">Traction Scale Models<\/a> modeled this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/962DC3DHR\/sydney-c-class-tram-1-87-ho?optionId=43253533\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney C Class Tram<\/a>\u00a0at HO scale\u00a0after<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the former Sydney break down tram 56s which for many years was attached to Fort Macquarie Depot (Now the site of the Sydney Opera House).
