But, that assumed you had a multicolor model in the first place. What if you want to\u00a0<em>add\u00a0<\/em>color to some plain old STL files? This week, we&#8217;ll walk you through a super simple way to paint color onto STL files with Meshmixer.<\/p>\n<h3>A\u00a0Tangle of\u00a0Color<\/h3>\n<p>As an example, consider the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/NYCRXAV6C\/perko-morph?key=7a3b98d16aa96025227ea0e4e5927559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perko Morph<\/a>\u00a0design in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/shops\/mathgrrl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geekhaus<\/a>\u00a0shop. This started as a collection of separate knots in STL format, none of which had any color information. The color was added\u00a0to each component in Meshmixer with a brush tool.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/710x528_18388153_10817505_1491717210.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/710x528_18388153_10817505_1491717210.png 710w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/710x528_18388153_10817505_1491717210-625x465.png 625w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/710x528_18388153_10817505_1491717210-363x270.png 363w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/710x528_18388153_10817505_1491717210-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Painting the Shark<\/h3>\n<p>We followed the method in this Autodesk 123D tutorial video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VEBoqg-KCPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autodesk Meshmixer 101: Painting and Printing in Color<\/a>, using a Paintcolor stencil brush to paint directly onto the mesh of our design.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VEBoqg-KCPQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This video is less than five minutes long and does a great job of telling you everything you need to know to get started painting your STL files. Watch it a bit before reading on&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Layer by Layer<\/h3>\n<p>In the example video above there was just one mesh to paint on, but if you have multiple STL files then you can load them into Meshmixer by &#8220;Appending&#8221; on the Import screen, and then select them one at a time in the Object Browser, as shown in the pop-up window at the bottom left of the image below. What now??<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/the-it-crowd\/episode-guide\/series-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30362 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/source.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If your stencil brush tool isn&#8217;t working the way you expect in Meshmixer, then\u00a0you might have some tool options set incorrectly. Match\u00a0your Properties and Refinement toolboxes to the settings shown in the image above the gif to try to fix the problem. If all else fails, sometimes quitting Meshmixer and starting over does something magical. We ran into this problem when we couldn&#8217;t see the colors in our mesh. The video link above tells you how to handle this problem, but for us it didn&#8217;t work until we tried turning\u00a0it off and on again. One we did that, we followed the instructions again \u2014 hold\u00a0the Shift key and select the leftmost &#8220;Color&#8221; option \u2014 and all the color became visible.
