Shapeways designer\/Z scale legend Stony Smith&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/EA9NY6QEL\/railroad-snow-plow-zscale?optionId=42416121\" target=\"_blank\">Railroad Snow Plow<\/a> is slightly narrower than a penny, and yet, he challenged a fellow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zcentralstation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Z Central Station<\/a>\u00a0community member to power it. That is, to power the rotary blade\u00a0that, in full scale, would serve to displace large quantities of snow on treacherous mountainous tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/EA9NY6QEL\/railroad-snow-plow-zscale?optionId=42416121\" target=\"_blank\">model<\/a> as initially printed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/product\/EA9NY6QEL\/railroad-snow-plow-zscale?optionId=42416121\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/snow-plow-train.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"528\" data-wp-pid=\"30221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/snow-plow-train.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/snow-plow-train-625x465.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/snow-plow-train-363x270.jpg 363w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/snow-plow-train-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, here&#8217;s the amazing response to Stony&#8217;s challenge, from\u00a0Z Central Station member David Wolf:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MbSZ7z-FP9M\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>David started by removing the rotary blade and drilling out the center of the wall behind the blade to install a bearing that would let the blade spin. That&#8217;s when things got tricky. The tiny gear motor, which spins the rotary blade, didn&#8217;t quite line up with the plow shaft. So, David modified the gear box and fashioned a connector between the motor and the rotary shaft with surgical tubing. The plow also needed lights and windows.
