Apply now for the Shapeways EDU Grant and you could receive up to $1000 in Shapeways credit to realize your idea.\u00a0Learn more about the Shapeways EDU Grant and apply at\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/education\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0; text-decoration: underline;\">shapeways.com\/education<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Grant winners\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alexandraion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandra Ion<\/a>, Johannes Frohnhofen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-wall.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ludwig Wall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.robertkovax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Kovacs<\/a>, Mirela Alistar,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jacklindsay.net\/bioemail.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Lindsay<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/plopes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Lopes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ht-timchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hsiang-Ting Chen<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickbaudisch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Baudisch<\/a>\u00a0from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpi.de\" target=\"_blank\">Hasso Plattner Institute<\/a> in Potsdam, Germany have recently published the completion of their research on Metamaterial Mechanisms and boy, were we blown away!<\/p>\n<p>To put it succinctly <a href=\"http:\/\/alexandraion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016UIST-Metamaterial-Mechanisms-authors-copy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Metamaterial Mechanisms<\/a> is an exploration of material forms as a way of building a mechanical behavior in to the material structure of a solid object. With this custom-developed software the students were able to generate 3D-printable mechanisms out of what is essentially a solid unit of material. The research group calls them metamaterials but they prefer &#8220;to think of them as\u00a0<i>machines<\/i>. We demonstrate metamaterial objects that perform a mechanical function.\u00a0Our metamaterial door latch, for example, transforms the rotary movement of its handle into a linear motion of the latch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lsTiWYSfPck\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The software allows &#8220;users to place different types of cells, including the shear cell, to add mechanical functionality to their objects.
