Today we are talking with Scott Denton<\/a>, New York designer who 3D modeled Dan Ko\u2019s custom engagement ring<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Can you tell us a little bit about when you got started 3D modeling, and how you evolved into the maker you are today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been fond of creating things since as long as I can remember, from drawing to sculpting to tinkering, whatever it may be. I finally got started in modeling when I went to school at Fullsail Universtiy in Orlando, Florida. I had originally wanted to concentrate in lighting but found during the process of making my reel at school I enjoyed creating the elements more that made up the scenes that made up my reel of work, and thus have been obsessed with it ever since.<\/p>\n

How did it feel when Dan reached out to you to create his engagement ring? Had you ever worked on an intimate project like this before?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It felt awesome that someone wanted to intrust me with with such an intimate display of love, and I got to help with the design, and they had faith in my creativity. I had not worked on something that intimate before.<\/p>\n

What was different about this project versus other projects you\u2019ve worked on in the past?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was different in that it was the first time I had to design around a stone, before the only constraint I really had were the size of a finger.<\/p>\n

What were some of the highlight of this project for you? What were some of the the best moments? Was there anything challenging?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was just a fun project, I had kinda stayed with Dan\u2019s guidelines to begin with and one day while I was waiting for him to get back to me I began started sketching and iterating on his ideas. What I came up with during that sketching session up with was pretty cool and when I showed Dan, he loved it and that eventually is what became the ring.<\/p>\n

\"Engagement<\/a><\/p>\n

What materials did you print in first?<\/strong> Frosted detail plastic, it\u2019s the highest detail material (at the time) so it was a good choice for ring prototypes. We realized on that first prototype that we needed to embellish the details a little bit also.<\/p>\n

Eventually, when we got it right in Frosted Detail, we ordered a sample in sterling silver. Once we were happy with that Dan made the order in platinum.<\/p>\n

How did you know that the ring would fit?<\/strong> Careful Measuring. I have a chart and I use Meshmixer to basically check the Diameter is correct. We also ordered in FUD first to make sure the dimensions were accurate.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

What was the iteration process like?<\/strong> For me it was mostly in 3D. I feel at this point I have a pretty good understanding of what I can and can\u2019t get away with in 3D before it becomes a real product with 3D printing.<\/p>\n

Can you tell us about some of your biggest learning moments and take aways from this project?<\/strong>
\nJust having a clear vision of what a customer wants. Dan is a great client – I hope I have more clients that are as easy to work with as Dan was.<\/p>\n

Do you have any advice for other designers that are looking to make engagement rings?<\/strong>
\nMake sure you know how to size the ring to the stones correctly, have a very long conversation about what the customer wants so you can help concept there vision correctly.<\/p>\n

Scott also recommends collecting lots of photos from your client initially, so you can get a really good idea of what they are looking for before you start making.<\/p>\n
