<\/span>Those who are unfortunate enough to fracture a limb but
\nfortunate enough to do so after the advent of the 3d Printing technology can
\nrejoice. Jake Evill<\/a>, an Architecture and Design school at Victoria University
\nof Wellington alum and Shapeways user, devised an ingenious alternative to the
\nclassic plaster of paris cast, one day effectively making the smelly,
\ncumbersome monolithic a thing of the past. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span>“Cortex” differs from traditional orthopedic
\nbraces by first 3D Scanning the broken limb, reconstructing it into a 3D model,
\nand algorithmically flowing a biomorhpic lattice support structure onto the
\nsurface. The digital file is then send to a 3D printer. The product is a robust
\nand stylish custom cast made from sintered Nylon. Parts are snapped together to
\ncreate a snug, perfect fit, and the open, ventilated membrane allows the wearer
\nto scratch a bothersome itch or run the structure underwater without fear of
\nturning your cast into bacterial playground. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Jake Evill’s invention marks one of the many recent 3D
\nprinted contributions towards the democratization of the health care industry.
\nNever before has it been so cost-effective to create a customized brace, and
\nEvill hopes to make the process that much easier by modeling each cast
